Rochester RazorSharks win PBL title - Apr 15, 2014
Jerice Crouch (6'0''-PG-84, college: Chattanooga), who rejoined the RazorSharks late in the season, was named MVP of the Premier Basketball League finals and brought home the championship trophy following a 110-86 win over the Indianapolis Diesels in the decisive Game 3 on Monday at Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester Community War Memorial. Crouch led the RazorSharks in scoring in the first two games, and finished with 17 points on Monday to win his fourth title with the team. "To bring a championship back to Rochester after the last couple years of coming up short is great. Words can't explain how I feel right now," said Crouch. Crouch started quiet but had eight points in the third quarter, stopping Indianapolis from building any momentum. This is the RazorSharks first championship since 2011 after falling to the Bloomington Flex in the finals the previous two seasons. The RazorSharks were lined up to play the Flex in the championship series, but the Flex were suspended from the league three days before the series started. RazorSharks head coach Lawrence Moten was not at the game Monday. RazorSharks owner Sev Hrywnak said earlier Monday that Moten had a family emergency. Assistant coach Keith Friel assumed the duties of head coach and said he used his past experience as a player in championship sereis as the head man. "I kind of know the atmosphere and the pressure of what it takes to win at this level," said Friel. "It's a one- game season; everything is a make-or-break situation but we jumped on them early and set the tone. We got easy buckets, got the ball down low and guys finished." Melvin Council (6'3''-G-82, college: Robert Morris) returned to the RazorSharks less than a month ago after spending the previous two years in the Canadian National Basketball League. The Rochester native and Wilson graduate led the RazorSharks with 24 points on Monday. Council, the MVP of the 2011 PBL playoffs, had 14 points in the first quarter, helping the RazorSharks jump out to a nine-point lead after, and they never looked back. The RazorSharks got off to a fast start, hitting 4 of 7 three pointers to open the game. The Diesels climbed to within nine at the end of the quarter, but they were unable to generate a comeback. Rochester opened its lead to 17 by halftime. Like in Game 1, the Diesels mounted a run in the third quarter and pulled to within as little as eight, but trailed 80-68 going into the fourth. Friel said the defense stepped up in Game 3 and made the difference. "We put an emphisis on getting stops and in transition," he said. "We have a deep team so we wanted to push the tempo and thought their legs would give out at the end." Courtesy of: democratandchronicle.com
Diesels to meet RazorSharks in PBL Finals - Apr 4, 2014
As it could be understood when a league owner also owns one of the same league top teams, the PBL decided that the Rochester RazorSharks, winners of East Division, will not meet in the Final Series the yet undefeated Bloomington Flex, but instead the more approachable Indiana Diesels team, #2 of Midwest Division. See here down the official statement released yesterday:
Chicago, IL- Effective immediately, the Bloomington Flex have been disqualified from championship competition, have forfeited the division championship and have been suspended from the PBL for the 2015 season due to its unwillingness and inability to participate in the championship series. The team with the next best record in the Midwest Division, the Indianapolis Diesels, have been declared the Midwest Division Champions and will participate in the PBL championship series for the league title to begin on Sunday, April 6th in Rochester against the East division champion Razorsharks.
You can read in the piece down the true reason why the Flex was unable to play as forced by PBL, and you can consider by yoursevles if this very quick disqualification of the PBL team with the best season record is suspect or not.
